Resident Alien

Desert heat – sand
drifting all these years
from Cairo to Canada
swept up in life
as it carried me away
down one alley
then another
bursting into sunshine
just in time
to feel the first drops
of rain.
I am alien here
empty morning streets
hot rain falling
mixes with salt
on my cheeks
too many sounds
foreign in my ears
I long to sit
alone on my beach
and listen

to nothing.
