Bonfires & Windy Highways

And I thought I was a bonfire,
flicker madly in the night,
And I thought I wouldn’t linger
Snuffed out quickly in the fight.

Never tarry was my motto,
Fingers touch and then away,
Closing doors behind me softly,
Never stopping long to say…

I wish that I had longer
but the road is calling me,
endless skies and empty highways,
Winds behind me blowing free,

And then came the frosting Winter,
10 million flakes upon the tree,
Stinging needles of the West wind,
Piercing deep inside of me,

Friendship lost behind my cloth mask,
No more footsteps come to play,
Empty sidewalks through my window,
Never stopping long to say…

I wish that I had longer
but the road is calling me,
endless skies and empty highways,
Winds behind me blowing free,

And now the candle gutters,
Melting puddle soft and grey,
Faint heat and lesser glimmer,
of the life before today…

I wish that I had longer,
sunrise more than endless night,
Stacking wood into the evening,
Building bonfires for the fight.
